Where it started

Hear It, Score It began in October 2026 as a small tool on one computer, built by Jeremy Young for a simple wish: hand over a video or a recording of someone playing the piano, and get the sheet music back. It worked well enough to be worth sharing, so it became this website.

Why it works the way it does

Before building it, we read what people said about the services that already did this. The same complaints came up again and again: previews too short to judge, a full song that came out worse than the preview, subscriptions that renewed without warning, and scores that printed every guess in the same confident black ink. So Hear It, Score It is built the other way round:

  • 20 min free, whole songs. Judge the real thing before you pay anything.
  • No subscription. Minutes are bought in packs, never expire and never renew.
  • Failed jobs refund themselves, and any pack can be refunded within 14 days.
  • Every key, free. Change the key of a score as often as you like without using minutes.
  • Honest about doubt. Notes the machine is unsure of are printed in grey, and we never quote an accuracy percentage.
  • Your recordings stay yours. They are used only to make your score, never to train software, and uploads are deleted after 30 days unless you keep the score.

What it is built on

The listening is done by an open-source piano transcription model published by researchers at ByteDance (Qiuqiang Kong and colleagues, High-resolution Piano Transcription with Pedals by Regressing Onset and Offset Times), used under its licence. Our own software then finds the beat, splits the hands, trims notes smeared by the pedal and marks uncertain notes. Scores are built with music21 and engraved with Verovio. More in how it works.
